Your Specific Responsibilities:

Professional environmental health work, under general supervision of an Environmental Manager, conducting permit application and plan reviews; site and complaint inspections or surveys; reviewing preparing reports, correspondence, legal notices; sample collection; data entry and analysis; or other comparable environmental health work. Investigate reported communicable diseases of environmental Health, Public Health, or a physical or biological science.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Good working knowledge of principles and objectives of environmental and public health programs
• Good working knowledge of environment and public health regulations
• Good working knowledge of biological, bacteriological, and chemical functions and the ability to explain need for compliance with environmental health regulations
• Knowledge of communicable diseases and understanding of epidemiological investigations
• Some knowledge of soil types and characteristics
• Some skill at operation surveying equipment
• Ability to establish effective positive working relationships with all customers
• Ability to read plats, maps, blueprints and to follow directions
• Ability to train and advise other environmental health personnel
• Ability to work outside in extreme weather conditions
• Ability to work in and around water
• Ability to instruct the public at all levels in a tactful and courteous manner
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
• Ability to use personal computers and various software programs
• Ability to drive a motor vehicle, valid Florida Operator's license to perform inspections
• Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments
• Ability to use good judgement when problem solving
• Ability to work independently
• Ability to make educational and informational presentations

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift 40 pounds
• Ability to s wim in pools and oceans
• Ability to work outside in extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, high humidity, dampness or chill conditions
• Ability to work in or with noisy conditions, in or with dusty conditions, with chemicals or solvents, with hazardous materials or with grease
• Ability to work on slippery or uneven walking surfaces, in or with moving objects or vehicles
• Ability to work with feet, legs or hands in water
• Ability to bend, balance, smell, stoop, reach, kneel, dig or hand auger
• Ability to read and interpret color charts
• Ability to communicate effectively with customers over the phone
• Ability to communicate effectively with customers in person

Minimum Qualifications:

• Valid Driver’s License to perform inspections.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in public health, environmental science, environmental health, or a physical or biological science with major coursework of at least 30 semester hours in science.
• Ability to edit databases
• Ability to type 35 words per minute
