Position overview

Position title: Lecturer
Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay at appointment. See the following table for the current salary scale for this position: A reasonable estimate is a base full time gross annual salary rate of $66,259-$91,718 for Lecturer positions.

Percent time: 20 - 100%

Anticipated start: If available, positions usually start in January, various times throughout the summer and/or in August. Applications are typically reviewed for summer session course needs in March, fall course needs in April, and in October for spring course needs.

The Department of Italian Studies at UC Berkeley welcomes applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach Italian Studies courses, should a departmental need arise, in any of the following possible areas:

- Italian Language

  • Reading and Composition (first- and second-year undergraduate writing courses in English on Italian topics, using Italian literature in translation)
  • Italian Literature and/or Culture (may include History, Film, Politics, and/or other related topics)

    General Duties: In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and interacting with students outside of class time via email and campus web based course resources.

    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

    Completed Master-s degree (or equivalent international degree)

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The department is usually unable to provide a visa/work permit.

Preferred qualifications

Completed PhD in Italian Studies (or international equivalent degree) or closely related field strongly preferred

Fluency in English language and in Italian Language

Experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level in the U.S.

If hired to teach R&C, demonstrated experience teaching reading and writing in English.

If hired to teach a language course, professional training in language teaching.

Demonstrated expertise of Italian literature and culture.
