Job Description

Simon?s Rock at Bard College invites applications for one or more full-time faculty positions in Performing Arts (theater, dance, music) beginning July 1, 2025. Candidates should be prepared to teach courses at all levels, from high school through introductory and intermediate college-level courses, and to contribute to the general education Seminar sequence.

Our Institution:

Founded in 1860, Bard College is an international network of highly innovative and admired educational institutions grounded in the liberal arts and sciences. Simon?s Rock at Bard College actualizes the simple yet radical idea that many students are ready for college before the age of 18. This idea, first envisioned by Elizabeth Blodgett Hall on the original Simon?s Rock campus in 1966 in Great Barrington, MA, launched the Early College movement in the United States and beyond. Simon?s Rock has carried out this mission for 59 years in Great Barrington, and in July of 2025 is relocating to the Massena campus of Bard College, in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY.

In this new location, Simon?s Rock will have a diverse student population of approximately 180 students, both boarding and day students, drawn nationally and internationally, with a significant population of students identifying as LGBTQIA . This includes enrollment in the Early College Associate in Arts degree program as well as in Bard Academy. Launched in 2015, Bard Academy is a two-year high school program with courses designed and taught by college professors and leading to entry into college after the 10 th grade. Students at the Massena campus may enter the Early College either as matriculants from Bard Academy or as students directly admitted to Early College after completing 10 th or 11 th grade, or the equivalent in homeschooled or non-traditional pathways.

The Role:

For Simon?s Rock at Bard College, we seek faculty passionate about the Early College mission of bringing rigorous curricula to younger scholars in a community of diverse learners. A commitment to contributing to both our Early College and Bard Academy curricula is essential, including general education courses and/or introductory courses that excite students in fields new to them. Ability and willingness to teach courses in multiple disciplines is a plus, including areas driven by student interest. Also a plus are contributions, past or future, to signature elements of the Simon?s Rock program including Simon?s Rock in Montserrat, the 3/2 Engineering programs, and the Bard Queer Leadership Project. Faculty are expected to actively pursue scholarly and/or creative work, and to demonstrate an ongoing engagement in their academic discipline. Also crucial is an eagerness to be part of a community of learners, present for students and colleagues.

This position is a full-time position with benefits, with all teaching and advising on-site at the Massena campus of Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY. Faculty are expected to be on campus for the equivalent of 4 full days per week during the academic semesters. Teaching will be distributed over 4 or 5 days of the week, as necessitated by the class schedule determined by the academic leadership.

Faculty positions are structured through contracts of increasing length, from one to five years. Faculty who have been previously evaluated successfully for a multi-year contract at Bard College at Simon?s Rock will be considered for a multiple year contract as the initial appointment. All others will begin with a one year contract as the initial appointment.

Duties include:

  • Teach 3 courses per semester (6 courses per academic year), including Bard Academy courses, Introductory and Intermediate Early College courses in the academic discipline(s), and general education Seminars

  • Teach individual and/or small group tutorials, and/or advise B.A. Senior Projects

  • Serve as individual Academic Advisor for Early College students and/or group Advisor for Academy students

  • Provide weekly office hours for Academy and Early College students, at least one hour per course offered, and individual support to students as needed

  • Serve on committees supporting the operations and governance of the programs, including attendance at required meetings

  • Contribute to scholarship and/or service in the academic discipline(s), including scholarship of practice and participation in Early College pedagogical outreach; sabbaticals are offered periodically, by application, to support professional development

  • Active presence in campus culture, including regular participation in Community Lunch, Community Meetings, and campus events

Required qualifications:

Advanced degree or significant record of creative work in the performing arts.

Experience teaching courses in the field at the college level

Demonstrated record of creative work in the field

Preferred qualifications:

Experience teaching courses in the field at the high school level

Experience teaching in an Early College program, liberal arts college, and/or independent school

Compensation: $61,000 to $65,000 for starting position; Faculty with previous teaching contracts at Bard College at Simon?s Rock are eligible for increased starting salary.

This salary range reflects the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for the position at the time of the job posting. Salary decisions are dependent on several factors including but not limited to market and organizational considerations, experience, and qualifications of a selected candidate as well as internal and external equity.

All applications must be accompanied by a cover letter, CV, and contact information for three references. Submit your files to interfolio.com. Address email inquiries to hr@simons-rock.edu .  No phone calls, please.
