Los Angeles Southwest College (LASC) announces an opening for a Dean of Academic Affairs. The Dean will be responsible for providing leadership and administrative supervision of the following academic departments: Arts and Humanities, Behavioral and Social Sciences, and Child Development; and work closely with the Distance Education Coordinator. The Dean will work under the direction of the Vice President of Academic Affairs and will work closely with the disciplines.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Dean will provide leadership for the development of the schedule of classes and facilitates long-range planning, curriculum development and academic program review. The Dean manages budget and assigns staff. The Dean will interpret, articulate, implement and monitor compliance with appropriate laws, regulations, labor contracts and policies and represents the Division of Academic Affairs on various campus, District-wide and regional committees.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The basic salary range is from $ 166,752 to $ 195,792 annually. Employee benefits include 15.5 paid holidays annually, 15-24 days paid vacation annually depending on length of District service, medical/hospital, dental and vision care plans and a $50,000 group life insurance policy.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for scheduling, budgeting and staffing of college programs for the selected academic departments of Arts and Humanities, Behavioral and Social Sciences, and Child Development Department.
  • Provide guidance to faculty for preparation of the college class schedule.
  • Provide leadership and administrative direction for compilation and analysis of data to support campus efforts in development and maintenance of programs, including information on grants and other student success opportunities.
  • Assist department chairs with long-range planning, enrollment management, faculty selection, load determination, evaluation, personnel management, staff and student worker supervision, faculty innovation and design & implementation of new technologies for instructional purposes.
  • Ensure compliance with all collective bargaining agreements.
  • Assist with the development and management of the Division's operational budget, including various general and restricted funds. Ensure educational quality while working with the available budget by monitoring expenditures, account transfers and balances.
  • Interpret, articulate, implement and monitor compliance with the California Education Code, LACCD Board Policies, Administrative Regulations, Labor Contracts, HR Guides and Personnel guides.
  • Represent Academic Affairs on a variety of committees and subcommittees under the college's shared governance structure. Serves as a resource to the Vice President on issues pertaining to the stated division's departments.
  • Work closely with the Distance Education Coordinator.
  • Serve as evening and weekend administrator on a rotational basis as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. A Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Completion of one year of full-time formal training, internship or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrative assignment.
  3. Sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.






DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS .

  • Experience in providing leadership to core disciplines associated with the division.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in planning, organizing and implementing instructional programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in interpreting, articulating and implementing a variety of laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Understanding of and commitment to participatory governance.
  • Knowledge of curriculum, new program orientation and program development.
  • Knowledge of online programs and experience in teaching online.
  • Knowledge and experience in curriculum development, scheduling, enrollment management and compliance with regulatory and contractual requirements.
  • Sensitivity to changing student population, ethnic and cultural diversity within those populations and the academic programs necessary to serve these students.
  • Knowledge of the management information needs of effective instructional programs and uses of various computer resources to meet these needs.
  • Experience and demonstrated knowledge of budget development and implementation and accounting procedures for regular and Specially Funded Programs including development of audit trails.
  • Possess personal characteristics necessary for working with students, employees and the public in an administrative capacity including: stability, good judgment, tact and the ability to cooperate with coworkers.
  • Experience working with academic departments.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to produce reports and other necessary documents.
  • Strong commitment to student equity and student success.
  • Strong commitment to institutional excellence.
  • Community college/university teaching experience in one of the disciplines of responsibility.
  • An understanding of the teaching/learning process, with young and adult learners.




GENERAL REQUIREMENTS



Health: A medical certificate indicating fitness to engage in administrative work is required for new employees at the applicant's expense after selection and prior to employment.



ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT - COVID 19 VACCINATION:


Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date. EVALUATION PROCEDURES

  2. A college selection committee will review all completed and approved application materials, and only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
  3. Selected candidates will be invited for an interview following the committee screening which will involve an evaluation of the candidate's qualifications in the areas of training, experience, and personal fitness.
  4. Based upon the selection committee report, the college President will interview the recommended finalists and will make the final decision.
  5. The Chancellor will recommend one candidate to the Board of Trustees for appointment.
